Do You Need to Rent a Car in Italy?

One of the most common questions I get is whether you need to rent a car in Italy.

For most travelers, my answer is surprisingly simple:

Probably not.

Italy has one of the best train systems in Europe. High-speed trains connect cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, Bologna, Milan, and Naples quickly and comfortably, often making them a better choice than driving.

Why I Usually Recommend Skipping the Rental Car

Driving in Italy isn't difficult, but driving in Italy's historic cities can be.

Many city centers have Limited Traffic Zones (ZTLs) that restrict vehicle access, and parking can be expensive, limited, or located well outside the historic center.

When you arrive by train, you're often just a short walk or taxi ride from your hotel. That means less stress and more time enjoying your vacation.

For most first-time visitors exploring Italy's classic destinations, trains are simply the easier option.

When a Car Does Make Sense

There is one place where I almost always recommend renting a car.

Tuscany.

If you're staying in the countryside—especially at a vineyard, agriturismo, or small hill town—a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Stopping at family-owned wineries, discovering quiet villages, and driving scenic country roads is part of what makes Tuscany so special.

Outside of Tuscany, however, I rarely think a rental car adds enough value to justify the extra cost and hassle.

My Advice

If you're visiting places like Rome, Florence, Venice, Bologna, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast, I'd skip the rental car and let Italy's trains do the work.

Then, if your trip includes several days in the Tuscan countryside, rent a car just for that portion of your vacation.

In my experience, that's the best balance between convenience and freedom—and it's the approach I recommend to most of my clients.
