I Didn't Expect the Colosseum to Affect Me Like It Did
I'd seen the pictures.
I'd watched the documentaries.
I'd even imagined what it would feel like to stand in front of one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
I thought I knew exactly what to expect.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
There are places in the world that don't truly become real until you're standing in front of them.
The Colosseum was one of those places for me.
The first thing that struck me wasn't its size.
It was its age.
Nearly two thousand years have passed since the Colosseum first opened its gates, and somehow it still dominates the heart of Rome. Millions of people have stood where I was standing—from Roman emperors and gladiators to travelers from every corner of the world.
For a moment, the city around me seemed to disappear.
I tried to imagine the roar of fifty thousand spectators filling the arena. The anticipation before a gladiator stepped onto the sand. The lives that were forever changed inside those walls.
It's impossible not to feel incredibly small.
But in the best possible way.
Travel has a funny way of doing that.
It's easy to get caught up in deadlines, schedules, emails, and everyday routines back home. Then you find yourself standing in front of something that's survived wars, earthquakes, political upheaval, and almost twenty centuries of history.
Suddenly, today's problems don't seem quite as overwhelming.
What surprised me most wasn't the architecture.
It was the feeling.
The Colosseum isn't just an ancient building.
It's a reminder of how temporary we are, and how incredible it is that places like this continue telling their stories long after the people who built them are gone.
When we left, I realized something.
The Colosseum wasn't my favorite part of Rome because it was famous.
It was my favorite because it reminded me why I love to travel in the first place.
Travel doesn't just show you new places.
Sometimes it changes the way you look at your own life.
And if you ever find yourself standing in front of the Colosseum, don't rush to take your photo and move on.
Pause.
Look up.
Imagine the thousands of lives that unfolded there before yours.
Then remember that one day, your own travel stories will become part of your history too.
