I Almost Walked Right Past It

One of my favorite things about Italy is how often history finds you when you aren't looking for it.

We were walking through Florence, surrounded by things people travel across the world to see, when I noticed this worn little face carved into the stone of Palazzo Vecchio.

At first, it didn't look important.

Honestly, it looked like someone had scratched a face into the wall hundreds of years ago.

Then I heard the story.

They say Michelangelo carved it.

I just stood there looking at it differently.

No glass case.
No museum.
No sign telling you to stop.

Just this little face, quietly sitting on the side of a building while thousands of people walk past it every day.

There are different stories about why Michelangelo supposedly carved it, and nobody can say for certain that he did.

But somehow that made me love it even more.

Because this is what keeps happening to me in Italy.

You turn a corner.
You look a little closer.
Someone tells you a story.

And suddenly a wall isn't just a wall anymore.

I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility that 500 years earlier, Michelangelo may have been standing in the exact same spot I was.

His hand against that stone.

And now his little mark is still there.

Italy is full of famous things.

But these are the moments I remember most.

The things I wasn't looking for.

The things I almost walked right past.
