Sometimes the Best Way to Experience Venice Is to Get Lost
People spend months planning their time in Venice.
They map out the shortest route to St. Mark's Basilica. They reserve gondola rides, search for the highest-rated restaurants, and build itineraries down to the hour.
I did some of that too.
But the moments I remember most happened after I put the map away.
The Beauty of Getting Lost
There's something magical about Venice that I've never experienced anywhere else.
You start walking with a destination in mind, only to find yourself distracted by a narrow alley, a tiny bridge, or the sound of church bells echoing through the centuries-old buildings.
One turn becomes another.
Soon you have absolutely no idea where you are.
Normally that would make me uncomfortable.
In Venice, it felt like exactly where I was supposed to be.
Without trying, we wandered into places that most visitors probably never see.
A quiet garden hidden behind ancient stone walls.
A tiny courtyard where the only sounds were birds singing and water gently lapping against the canal.
Then, just a few minutes later, we came across something that stopped us in our tracks.
A weathered doorway opened directly onto the canal. The afternoon light reflected off the water, casting an incredible blue glow through the entrance. It almost didn't look real.
It felt like someone had painted the light itself.
There wasn't a crowd gathered around it.
No tour guide holding up a flag.
No one taking hundreds of selfies.
It was simply there, quietly waiting for someone curious enough to wander past.
I couldn't tell you exactly where it was today.
And somehow, I think that's what makes it so special.
What Venice Taught Me
People often ask me what they shouldn't miss when they visit Venice.
Of course I tell them to see St. Mark's Basilica.
Walk across the Rialto Bridge.
Take a gondola ride if it's something you've always dreamed about.
Those places deserve their reputation.
But I also tell them something else.
Leave time to get lost.
Put your phone away.
Turn down the street that looks interesting.
Cross the bridge that wasn't on your itinerary.
Because the real magic of Venice isn't found in checking famous landmarks off a list.
It's found in the unexpected moments between them.
Years later, I don't remember every bridge I crossed or every church I admired.
But I still remember that glowing blue doorway.
I remember the quiet garden.
Those are the moments that make Venice unforgettable.
Next time, I'll tell you about the tiny restaurant we stumbled into—and the conversation over limoncello that reminded me kindness doesn't need a common language.
