The Best Travel Story from Italy Started with Missing Our Train Stop
A shared bottle of wine, new friends, and one missed train stop turned into one of our favorite memories in Italy. Here's why the best travel experiences don't always go according to plan.

The Best Train Ride I Ever Took in Italy Didn't End in Venice
Sometimes the best memories from a trip aren't part of the itinerary.
They're the ones you never planned.
My wife and I were on a high-speed train headed for Venice when we met another American couple sitting nearby. What started as a quick conversation somehow turned into one of those travel moments that reminds you why you leave home in the first place.
Out came a bottle of wine.
Then some cheese.
A sleeve of crackers.
Before we knew it, our train table had become an impromptu charcuterie board as we spent the next couple of hours sharing stories about our adventures across Italy. We laughed about getting lost, compared favorite meals, traded recommendations, and talked as if we'd known each other for years instead of a couple of hours.
We were having such a good time...
...that we completely forgot to get off the train.
It wasn't until I happened to glance out the window that something didn't feel right.
I checked the route.
Then I checked it again.
"We missed Venice."
Not by a minute.
Not by one stop.
We were headed straight to Milan.
After a brief moment of disbelief, I looked at my wife and, perhaps influenced by one too many glasses of wine, said,
"Why don't we just stay in Milan?"
For a split second, it sounded like a perfectly reasonable idea.
Then she looked at me with that expression only a spouse can give and reminded me of one tiny detail.
"Our flight home leaves from Venice."
Right.
That probably mattered.
Thankfully, this is one of the reasons I love traveling in Italy.
Before we even arrived in Milan, I pulled out my phone, opened the Trenitalia app, and booked seats on the very next train back to Venice. When we stepped off in Milan, we simply walked across the platform and boarded another train.
Our "disaster" had turned into nothing more than a two-hour detour.
Looking back, I don't even remember being frustrated.
I remember sharing wine with strangers who made the train ride unforgettable.
I remember laughing with my wife while standing in Milan wondering how we'd managed to miss an entire city.
And I remember realizing something that has completely changed the way I travel.
Years ago, a mistake like that would have ruined my day.
Today?
It's one of my favorite stories.
Travel has taught me that the goal isn't to avoid every mistake.
The goal is to recover gracefully when they happen.
Because sometimes the mistakes become the memories.
And years later, those are almost always the stories worth telling.
