The Little Things Matter: What Parmigiano Reggiano Taught Me About Italian Pride
One of the things I love most about Italy is the pride people put into what they do.
I still remember pulling up to the dairy farm near Parma and how peaceful everything felt. The countryside was unbelievably green, with a soft mist hanging in the air. There was that unmistakable smell of cows mixed with the cool, damp air, and somehow the whole thing felt calming. It was quiet, simple, and completely unpretentious — the kind of place where you immediately understood that what happened there had been done with care for a very long time.
Once inside, I realized just how deep that pride goes.
Parmigiano Reggiano doesn’t simply begin when the milk reaches the copper vats. It starts out in the fields. Even the cows’ diet is carefully regulated, with much of the grass and hay they eat coming from within the Parmigiano Reggiano production area. What those cows eat ultimately affects the milk, and the milk affects everything that comes afterward.
Then there’s the cheesemaking itself — the temperature of the milk, the timing, the cutting of the curds, the salting, and finally the long aging process. The wheels are moved into enormous aging rooms where the temperature, humidity, and surrounding air all become part of what happens next.
And then they wait.
Not for a few weeks, but for a year at minimum, and often for two, three, or even more years.
What amazed me was that after all that time, they still don’t automatically know whether they’ve produced a wheel worthy of being called Parmigiano Reggiano. Each one has to be inspected. A specially trained expert walks through the aging room tapping the wheels with a small hammer and listening to the sound for signs of imperfections hidden inside.
Think about that.
Years of feeding the cows correctly, tending the milk, making the cheese, turning the wheels, controlling the environment, and waiting — only to eventually find out whether all of those tiny decisions came together the way they were supposed to.
That’s when it really hit me:
None of the little things were actually little.
And maybe that’s true in life too.
The little things we do every day may not always get noticed. The extra effort. The care. The time. Doing something right even when nobody is watching.
But it all adds up.
Someone may not notice every individual thing you do, but in the end, the love and pride you put into something can still be felt.
Sometimes the smallest things really do make the biggest difference.
And that, to me, is very Italian.
